The leaders and supporters of the YMCA in Washington, Iowa, dreamt of, planned and fundraised for a new facility to replace a 1920s-era facility in the city's downtown for five years before construction was finally able to begin in October 2018. Carl A. Nelson & Company served as design-builder for the project, built on a greefield site in Washington. The new YMCA of Washington County opened in June 2020 after being delivered on-time and under budget.
The project represents the first of two phases. The second phase, also being led by CANCO's design-build team, aims to add an aquatic facility to replace an aging swimming pool at the downtown site that has been in use since before the Great Depression.
The two-story building features a full-size basketball court, second-story indoor track, extensive resistance and cardio training facilities and equipment, fitness classrooms, locker rooms, short-term childcare center for members using the facility, community gathering space, commercial kitchen and more. All in a wide open space that is drenched during the day in natural light.
Compared to downtown, parking will not be a challenge for patrons or staff, thanks to a 60,000 SF parking lot that was added to Phase I using budget saved elsewhere on the guaranteed maximum price project.
In December 2020, Ceco Building Systems selected the facility as one of four winners nationally in its annual Ceco Project Awards, in which selections are based on "the attractiveness of the exterior, skill of construction and effective use of Ceco products and components."
The Owner was pleased with the finished facility, as well as with how Carl A. Nelson & Company approached the project from conception through completion.
"I just feel like Carl A. Nelson, in the way they supported this project, ... I felt like that they were very vested in our community and wanted it to be a success. I didn't feel like they were just here building a building. I felt like that they were truly a part of what we were trying to do in our community, and I think that shows as people are coming into the building and the experience that they are having."
