The leaders and supporters of the YMCA in Washington, Iowa, dreamt of, planned and fundraised for a new facility to replace a 1920s-era facility in the city's downtown for five years before construction was finally able to begin in October 2018. Carl A. Nelson & Company served as design-builder for the project, built on a greenfield site in Washington. The new YMCA of Washington County opened in June 2020 after being delivered on-time and under budget.

The project represents the first of two phases. The second phase, also being led by CANCO's design-build team, aims to add an aquatic facility to replace an aging swimming pool at the downtown site that has been in use since before the Great Depression.

The two-story building features a full-size basketball court, second-story indoor track, extensive resistance and cardio training facilities and equipment, fitness classrooms, locker rooms, short-term childcare center for members using the facility, community gathering space, commercial kitchen and more. All in a wide open space that is drenched during the day in natural light.

Compared to downtown, parking will not be a challenge for patrons or staff, thanks to a 60,000 SF parking lot that was added to Phase I using budget saved elsewhere on the guaranteed maximum price project.

The Owner was pleased with the finished facility, as well as with how Carl A. Nelson & Company approached the project from conception through completion
