Annual honors for employee contributions to the success of Carl A. Nelson & Company were presented during the company's annual Christmas party, held Dec. 9, 2022. Recognitions are presented to field and salaried employees whose efforts to deliver safety, quality and value to the company and its clients result in nomination by co-workers.
The Bob Harris Field Leadership Award for 2022 was presented to Field Foreman Joe Byrd. Byrd, who is a 15-year veteran of the construction industry, joined CANCO in 2016 as a craftsman, and was promoted to foreman in April 2021. He resides at Danville, and currently is assigned to the CANCO team working in the Construction Manager at-Risk role for the University of Iowa, leading and performing work on the Biosecurity Level 3 Lab and Support Spaces Addition at the State Hygienic Lab in Coralville.
Nomination papers described Byrd as "always professional with a very positive attitude," "willing to learn new skills and tasks," and "leads and trains by example."
The 2022 Salaried Employee of the Year is Project Superintendent Chad Sawyer, who has 23 years of construction experience and joined CANCO in 2019. The nomination of Sawyer for the award described him as "very respectful to subcontractors and employees," willing to "go above and beyond for clients and employees," committed to making "great effort to utilize resources that he has on-hand before asking for more," and "will make sure that work is done correctly and safely the first time."
Sawyer, of Center Point, currently is leading Carl A. Nelson & Company's efforts in the field on a series of projects for Peoples Community Health Clinic in Waterloo, including a large Design-Build expansion of clinical services. He is one of CANCO's 31 employee-owners.
