Burlington, Iowa, based design-build, construction management and general contracting firm goes 2,192 days without a lost-day accident — and counting.

After almost 2,200 days, Carl A. Nelson & Company (CANCO) has achieved a new safety milestone. As of Feb. 21, 2026, the company has surpassed six full years — 2,191 days — without a lost-day injury to an employee or subcontractor on one of our job sites.

"This is no small accomplishment," Safety Director David Hunt said in a congratulatory note distributed to the CANCO team. "It speaks volumes about your commitment to your own personal safety, as well as your co-workers'."

The obstacles to reaching such a span have not been insignificant, Hunt noted, citing the range of tasks undertaken by Carl A. Nelson & Company crews that each create "unique challenges."

"We need to be continually aware," Hunt said, "and not take safety for granted."

Carl A. Nelson & Company maintains a comprehensive safety program that gives every field employee, field supervisors and project manager a role in safety. Hunt went on to encourage continued vigilance, and use of available resources such as Job-Hazard Analysis to keep employees safe and jobs moving.

"Thanks for making safety a priority on the job," he said. "Let's not rest on our laurels, but continue to set the standard for safety in our industry. Let's keep it going for many years to come."
