FORT MADISON, Iowa — At its meeting Monday, May 3, 2021, the Fort Madison Community School District Board of Education voted to award a construction management contract to Carl A. Nelson & Company to lead the $25 million first phase of a two-phase, two-building renovation and addition project.

CANCO was selected ahead of two competitors based on its reputation for quality in school construction management, and past local project history in Fort Madison.

Phase I of the overall $51.5 million, two-phase improvement program includes work at Fort Madison High School and Fort Madison Middle School.

At FMHS, which is set to become a junior/senior high school, Phase I includes a new middle school gym and locker room, new main entrance, secure entry and administration addition, commons and food service expansion, special education renovations, a grades 7-8 addition, and parking and pickup/drop-off improvements.

At FMMS, which becomes a Pre-K to sixth-grade school, the work in Phase I will include a commons expansion, a Pre-K-1 addition, multipurpose room addition and traffic flow improvements.

Leading the project for CANCO will be Vice President Chris Smith as project manager, and Alan Schock as project engineer. A superintendent will be named at a later date.

Carl A. Nelson & Company, a top school construction management firm in Iowa, works all over the state leading construction projects, as well as providing needs assessment and master planning, and pre-bond planning services to school districts. Projects across these stages of development also currently are underway for the Keokuk, Fairfield, Mid-Prairie (Kalona), IKM-Manning, Washington, College (Cedar Rapids), and Sioux Center school districts.

As construction manager, CANCO will provide pre-construction services to the school district, which includes budget and schedule development, design review and value engineering, lead bid package development, then provide on-site supervision of the construction.
