Carl A. Nelson & Company picked to lead school project

Officials with the IKM-Manning Community School District, based in Manning, Iowa, notified Carl A. Nelson & Company on April 21 the 107-year-old firm had been selected to provide pre-bond planning and construction management services on a proposed $14.4 million addition and renovation project.
CANCO was chosen from among three firms that had been named finalists for the project and interviewed April 15.
The IKM-Manning School Board made the selection official by issuing a contract April 23.
Voters in the western Iowa school district will go to the polls in September to determine whether to approve the sale of bonds to fund the project, which includes renovation and expansion of district school facilities in Manning.
In the period leading up to the election, Carl A. Nelson & Company will team with IKM-Manning CSD and Ames, Iowa,-based architectural firm HAILA ASP as a design-assist partner, including value engineering review of the initial design; while also acting as a resource to the community to answer questions about construction- and cost-related issues raised by school district constituents.
Upon successful passage of the bond referendum, CANCO would begin preparing bid packages and working to encourage local-contractor participation in the project.
Carl A. Nelson & Company has a successful track record of local-builder participation in construction management projects. On a current project in northwestern Iowa, where CANCO is construction manager for a $42.6 million high school building project in Sioux Center, contractors located within 15 miles of the town account for 72 percent of the construction cost. Contractors within 45 miles of Sioux Center account for 90 percent of the construction budget.
As construction manager, CANCO's project manager and site superintendent would guide the efforts of builders on behalf of the school district, and keep school officials and community members up-to-date on construction progress.
