1: Our People

At Carl A. Nelson & Company, we nurture our tradition of excellence, and take pride in what we do. Since 1913, who we have chosen as employees has been critical to our success, and we value our team. As an employee-owned company since the 1940s, we recognize that our team — in the office and in the field — is at the center of our firm's ability to succeed. That means we're choosy about who we hire, and look for people we believe will be a good fit with our corporate culture of Fairness and Honesty, Quality Workmanship and Service Second to None.

CANCO employs about 120 direct-hire employees, in roles ranging from carpenters to equipment operators and construction supervisors, to civil and construction engineers, construction managers, architects and office specialists in areas like accounting. Our offices in Burlington and Cedar Falls function as one.

In addition to working hard, we know how to have fun and celebrate being part of the CANCO team, with annual group outings throughout the year that bring us together for fellowship away from the office and job site.

2: Opportunities to Advance

Carl A. Nelson & Company's range of customers and project types will provide continuous opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge, whether in the field or in the office. To enhance that development, we regularly offer skills and equipment training for construction craftsmen and field leaders, and continuing education for field supervisory, project management and office personnel. CANCO also provides routine opportunities for advancement — through the field supervisory and project management ranks, and into employee-ownership. Our team of employee-owners represent the field and the office, and include superintendents and project managers who started with CANCO as entry-level carpenters or engineers and rose through the ranks before being invited to become shareholders.

3: Great Benefits

CANCO offers an industry-leading benefits package to our employees, including health, dental and vision insurance, paid time-off, paid training and a 401(k) retirement plan with a generous company match.

4: Our Focus on Safety

At Carl A. Nelson & Company, the safety of our employees, subcontractors, suppliers and job site visitors is of primary concern at all levels of management. And our track record proves it. In recent years, we've twice exceeded 1 million man hours without a lost day accident. We know everyone has a role in maintaining safe work sites, from the newest construction laborer to the corporate safety director and company president, and everyone in between.

“I look at a good safety program as a mechanism to help mitigate the risk that we add to our lives by working in this industry. Construction is awesome in that we turn out a custom product with every project, but also makes it a challenge to manage potential hazards with a new location and new personnel on every project. Having a good safety program goes a long way in being able to assess and avoid hazards.”

— Alan Schock, project manager

Nelson & Company as a place to build long-term careers.
